I create, whether that be paintings, t-shirts, jewellery, cards or other items I try to reflect the beauty I see.
I find myself drawn to both the natural world and the shadows and echoes left both on the land and in objects and tales by those that came before us. The people that made them are long gone, their culture and the world they inhabited lost with them. One finds only glimpses of that world and through eyes that are changed by knowledge, science and technology, yet somehow deep inside ourselves we still hear those echoes. The years of history are etched in the land like shadows. There is a world of magic still out there if we dare reach out.
I have always enjoyed art and crafting, even as a child. I have a long interest in fantasy, myths and legends, my mother used to read tales from Greek mythology when I was ill. I have a degree in Applied arts ceramics from Glyndwr. My final piece was a colaboratary work with a local primary school making paper thin porcelain birds commenting about the damage we are doing to the environment. I have worked with horses and have had many animals in my life. I have been involved in dark age re-enactment, Celtic, Viking Saxon and Norman. I enjoy walking, photography and visiting historical sites. I believe in recycling and re-using to create something new. All these interests have been sources of inspiration and can be seen reflected in my work.
I worked for many years as a teaching assistant in Primary education, which I had to leave due to health issues and am currently working as a personal assistant as well as trying to develop my own creative business.
At the current time in my life I find myself living on the beautiful Devon coast near Plymouth. My daughter has started university and I am pursuing my creativity once again. I enjoy working in acrylic paint.
There is so much beauty around us that passes unnoticed if we don’t pause our busy lives and look. Nature has created so much for us to enjoy, from rocks and crystals, to sunsets and coastline, woods and rivers and the creatures that inhabit it, birds and animals and the fantastical beasts of our legends and myths.
I believe we need to look after our world which is why as well as new components I also reuse old jewellery, taking it to pieces to make something new. There is something very satisfying about taking something unloved and discarded and making something bright, beautiful and new. I never reuse earring hooks, all hooks are new and never been worn. My cards are made from images of my paintings or original photography. The designs on T shirts are either hand done or created using stencils which I draw and hand cut.
I have a small jewellery workshop in my house overlooking a bay. I am a member of the Eddystone Art Group and it is with this group I do most of my paintings.
I exhibit at local fairs and exhibitions and am just starting to dip my toe into the online world!
I hope you find the time to pause, take a breath and enjoy the many wonders around us.
